The space
A cooperatively-owned reforestation project located in the rural mountains of Puriscal, Costa Rica, VerdEnergia is a sustainable turmeric, permaculture, and agroforestry farm situated within 178 acres of regenerated land. As a small community of people on a mission to share practical applications of regenerative living, we use the principles of permaculture as our guiding tool to transmute the challenges facing our communities into replicable solutions. We’ve integrated established practices with our humble beginnings to cultivate a thriving lifestyle, sustaining and regenerating our lives in the same way we interact with the land we’re honored to call home. For 14 years people from all over the world have come to Verde to learn about permaculture, community living, farm-to-table nourishment and more.

VerdEnergia is a thriving working farm in a remote jungle setting, located in the middle of a biological corridor in between two national parks. Our food forest nurtures forth an abundance of turmeric as well as over 50 varieties of edible & medicinal plants- including noni, ginger, cacao, katuk, chaya, yucca, papaya, jackfruit, moringa, frijole palo, and many varieties of delicious greens, citrus, peppers, plantains and bananas. The rainy season is from around May into October, with sunny mornings and refreshing afternoon rains. The temperature is moderate for Costa Rica, a bit warmer than San Jose and sometimes humid. We recommend bringing a flashlight, good shoes, reusable water bottle, hat or natural sunscreen, umbrella or rain jacket, shorts, swimsuit, long pants, long shirt, and intention to immerse yourself in permaculture and nature.

During quiet hours you’ll hear the cicadas, tree frogs and lull of the river clearly; while the occasional motorbike, truck, horse, or cow passes by just several times per day. The gentle sound of the nearby river and waterfalls is ongoing. Outside of quiet hours farm life includes pool cleaning parties, yoga classes, harvest processing, and occasionally music and ping pong. Generally the soundscape is peaceful, relaxing and natural, and there are plenty of places on the property to experience complete solitude.

You will share a bathroom, compost toilet, shower, and outdoor kitchenette with other guests. All are separate from each other so you should be able to access the facilities you need at any time. Communal meals are served in the main house dining room, and in this space there is also a lounge area for relaxing or reading. Outside the main house are two shared picnic tables, and inside the main house is a shared dining table for eating. Our freshwater swimming pool is available, and we have a multi-use covered outdoor studio space with mats, props, and mirrors, a speaker for music, and a ping pong table. The property has various natural areas, gardens and spaces along the river as well, which offer infinite privacy for everyone.

Wi-Fi:
While our recently upgraded Wi-Fi is highly impressive and satisfactory for us, we recognize that some folks have a need to be more connected. There is limited Wi-Fi available 24/7 (unless it goes out for a little while, sometimes it does that), located about 10 minutes walk to a different structure on the farm. It’s pretty reliable for whatsapp messaging, emailing, web browsing, and voice calls, but uploading, downloading, streaming media or video calling is generally too much to ask.

The Jungle:
As with anywhere in a jungle setting in Costa Rica, there are wild animals, some of which can be dangerous if disturbed. While it is super rare to come into contact with dangerous wild animals, guests should be prepared for the potential of interacting with and respecting the distance of venomous snakes or insects, jungle cats or other wild creatures.

Insects and many other types of creatures regularly lounge around our open air jungle homes, and we encounter these all the time. So as we share our food and land with you we’ll also teach you how to spot them, and if you’re mindful of their space they will usually do the same for you.

Please note, the property is not suitable for wheelchairs and can be hazardous to people with special needs such as gait or balance issues. Paths can be muddy and slippery at times, we ask everyone to practice utmost awareness and walk mindfully at all times.
