Description
Here at Bear-Foot farms we are putting to good use all the organic practices we learned from when we used to be Certified Organic. We have not been silent about how disappointed we are with the inforcement of the Organic laws. We gave up our Certification because it seemed the only people being checked out were those in the program. Nothing was being done to those just "saying" they were Organic. We are very pleased with ourselves for being able to keep things pesticide and herbicide free. Although some of our die hard, "has to be certified organic before I will buy it "customers left us, we gained more then we ever dreamed of. We have done well enough to expand our operation. We now offer along with all our produce, grass fed beef, pasture raised pork, chicken and turkey. We have also joined forces with Western Michigan University in a Food Diversion Program. They are the only one in the state that has a program authorized by the U.S.D.A, where the fruit and vegetable scraps from all of their kitchen prep work for the dining halls is collected and used as livestock feed for our pigs. We are very happy with the way this is working out and the pigs think it's great too. Our products can be found at Hardings Market Place on South Westnedge in Portage and at the indoor winter farmers market on the corner of Crosstown and Burdick in Kalamazoo every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm. starting in Dec. and running till the last Saturday in April. From the first Saturday in May till Thanksgiving we are outdoors at the Kalamazoo Farmers market on Banks St in Kalamazoo. You are also most welcome to come out to the farm but please call ahead so we can be sure to be home when you come.
