Description
Located on the historic Stephen D. Wheeler Farmstead in the heart of the Coleman Station Historic District (listed on the National Register of Historic Places, 1993), Dashing Star Farm is a family run enterprise. Starting in 1994, we developed our own unique cross breed of sheep (mainly using the English Romney and Border Leicester breeds) with a distinct palette of natural colors and wool characteristics, while still producing a true multi-purpose animal. We have recently introduced a line of pure-bred Coopworth sheep, developed originally in New Zealand, and Finnsheep, known for the tenderest meat. We market lambs, yarn, roving, batting, and sheepskins. Additional products include handknit scarves, hats, sweaters, blankets, felted wool dryer balls and cat toys, wool felt tech cases, and layette sets. Also offered are pet futons, wool bed and throw pillows, knitting and crocheting patterns handsewn decorative shams and clothing, handcrafted woodenware, and toys. We are happy to accommodate your orders for wool mattress pads and custom-sized versions of our sewn and knit items. Edible farm products include lamb, herbs, vegetables, fruit, baked goods, and free-range colored eggs from our naturally raised Auracana, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Barred Rock, Ancona, Speckled Sussex, Rose-comb and Single-comb Brown Leghorn and New Hampshire Red Hens and our Toulouse Geese. Our livestock is raised organically, free-ranged on rotated pastures, and supplemented with locally grown whole grains. Compost is available in bags , bulk or in the form of tea bags both retail and wholesale. Our farm is accessible from NYS Rte 44 in NE Dutchess County near the CT border and is adjacent to the Harlem Valley Rail Trail. Farm visits can be scheduled by appointment.
